Intra-Party Speculations Heat Up
As the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections approach, discussions within the Congress party regarding potential candidates for the Chief Ministerial post have intensified. Despite efforts from the party leadership to quell speculation, names of several prominent leaders, including Ramesh Chennithala, are increasingly dominating conversations.
P.J. Kurien, a seasoned Congress figure and former Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha, reignited these discussions during a United Democratic Front (UDF) election convention in Thiruvalla, Kottayam. On March 25, 2026, he expressed his strong belief in Chennithala’s capability to lead the state, declaring, “I have no doubt that Mr. Chennithala will be the Chief Minister.”
Kurien’s Endorsement Shakes the Party
Kurien’s remarks have sparked widespread speculation about the party’s leadership dynamics. He confidently stated that Chennithala would take a seat on the Treasury Bench in the Kerala Legislative Assembly following the polls on May 4. This assertion has set the political grapevine buzzing, leading to various interpretations across traditional media and social platforms.
Within the party, support for Chennithala appears to be gaining traction, with several senior leaders reportedly endorsing his candidacy over other prominent figures such as V.D. Satheesan and K.C. Venugopal. This has led to increased scrutiny of the Congress party’s internal politics and strategies leading up to the elections.
Chennithala’s Measured Response
Surprisingly, Ramesh Chennithala responded to Kurien’s enthusiastic endorsement with a degree of caution. He emphasized that any final decision regarding the Chief Ministerial candidate would rest with the Congress High Command, which will consult with the members of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) before making a choice. “The Congress and UDF are united to bring an end to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule,” he mentioned, urging party members to focus on the upcoming elections.
Concerns About Disunity
However, not everyone in the party is entirely supportive of the buzz surrounding Chennithala. K.C. Joseph, another Congress leader, raised concerns about the potential divisiveness that such speculation could invoke within the party ranks. He warned that the focus should remain on winning the elections rather than on internal disputes.
V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition, has also weighed in on the conversation regarding leadership, noting the pressing need for solidarity among party members. The political landscape in Kerala has become increasingly competitive, and any internal strife could hinder their efforts against the LDF.
A Galaxy of Leaders
Despite challenges, V.D. Satheesan remains optimistic about the party’s capabilities, asserting that Congress boasts “a galaxy of leaders” equipped to tackle any political challenge. This sentiment reflects a broader strategy within the party to present a united front as the elections draw near.
Future of Congress in Kerala
The apparent conflicts and speculations around the Chief Ministerial candidate serve as a reminder of the dynamic political environment in Kerala. As the Congress party navigates through these discussions, its ability to maintain unity and a clear electoral strategy will be crucial in determining its success in the upcoming assembly elections.
As the UDF strives to challenge the ruling LDF, the coming weeks will be pivotal in solidifying leadership decisions that could shape Kerala’s political future for years to come.
