Introduction to Roc-A-Coe
In the heart of Chennai, along the charming Khader Nawaz Khan Road, a unique cocktail experience awaits at Roc-A-Coe. This newly opened bar, crafted by Karl Fernandes, a seasoned bartender from Goa, is a celebration of the art of mixology, echoing the vibes of a classic 1930s cocktail bar. With its exquisite Art Deco interiors and a creative cocktail menu, Roc-A-Coe is poised to become a must-visit for cocktail enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike.
A Vision Realized
Karl Fernandes brings 16 years of experience in the food and beverage industry to Roc-A-Coe. He has previously worked at prominent establishments like Bar Tesouro in Goa, Bar Kin Ru in Hyderabad, and Permit & Co in Mumbai. For Karl, establishing a presence in Chennai was a calculated move. “I’m an opportunist who looks at new markets,” he explains. His research on the local scene revealed a growing appreciation for cocktails that made Chennai an attractive option for his latest venture.
Art Deco Ambiance
Stepping inside Roc-A-Coe, patrons are greeted by a stunning blend of Art Deco elements, featuring strong geometric lines and vibrant colors. The interior design is both nostalgic and modern, with a rich palette of browns, burgundies, greys, and striking teal accents. The ambiance, highlighted by unique cocktail posters from the 1920s and 30s, sets the stage for a delightful drinking experience.
Innovative Cocktail Menu
The cocktail menu at Roc-A-Coe is a journey through time, with drinks inspired by the historical punch houses of Old Madras. Divided into three main segments, the menu begins with “The Vestiges of Old Madras.” The opening drink, “Esplanade, First Served,” pays homage to the rich drinking culture that took root in George Town during the 1700s.
Among the bar’s highlights is the “Cobbles & Hooch,” a whisky-based drink that incorporates lime juice and a mango ginger cordial, inspired by the newly renovated cobblestone path of Khader Nawaz Khan Road. This approach reflects the bar’s commitment to using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, ensuring that the offerings remain fresh and appealing.
Local Appreciation for Mixology
Karl recognizes the impressive spending capacity of Chennai’s residents and their appreciation for curated experiences. This demand for high-quality cocktails motivated him to launch Roc-A-Coe when the newly revamped Khader Nawaz Khan Road opened. The initial success of the bar is a testament to the city’s evolving drinking culture, and the team is dedicated to continuously updating the menu based on customer favorites and ingredient availability.
An Invitation to Discover
As Roc-A-Coe continues to gain popularity in Chennai, it serves as an invitation to residents and visitors alike to explore the delightful world of cocktails. With a commitment to quality and innovation, Karl Fernandes and his team are on a mission to elevate Chennai’s nightlife and cocktail scene.
