New Additions to Nehru Zoological Park
The Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad has welcomed two new residents, marking an exciting evolution in its diverse animal collection. On March 26, 2026, two male mandrills, both siblings aged around 23 months, were released into their new enclosure for public display.
Animal Exchange Program with Jamshedpur Zoo
This initiative forms part of a strategic animal exchange program between Nehru Zoological Park and Jamshedpur Zoo. In this arrangement, the Hyderabad zoo exchanged a pair of its African lions in return for the mandrills. Such exchanges are pivotal in promoting biodiversity and ensuring the genetic health of species in captive environments.
Quarantine Process Prior to Release
Before being introduced to the public, these new mandrills spent 45 days in quarantine after arriving from Jamshedpur. This precautionary measure is standard procedure, ensuring that the animals were healthy and ready to adapt to their new home. The release event was attended by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden Vinay Kumar, along with other zoo officials.

With the introduction of the mandrills, Nehru Zoological Park now houses a total of 196 species comprising over 2,100 individual animals.
