Nainar Nagenthran’s Long Association with Tirunelveli
Nainar Nagenthran, the BJP State president, has officially stepped away from contesting in the Tirunelveli Assembly constituency, bringing an end to a remarkable 25-year political journey. This shift comes as the AIADMK has retained the constituency for the upcoming April 23 elections, confirming the latest political dynamics in Tamil Nadu.
Rise to Prominence in Tamil Nadu Politics
Nagenthran’s association with the Tirunelveli constituency dates back to 2001, when he was first fielded by the then AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa. His debut election saw him narrowly triumph over DMK candidate A.L. Subramanian by just 722 votes. His success allowed him to join the Jayalalithaa-led Cabinet, where he held significant portfolios including electricity, transport, and industries from 2001 to 2006.
A Rollercoaster Political Journey
Despite an auspicious start, Nagenthran’s path was filled with challenges. After losing the 2006 election to DMK’s N. Malairaja by 606 votes, he made a comeback in 2011, winning with a substantial margin of 38,491 votes over A.L.S. Lakshmanan. The subsequent elections, however, proved to be tumultuous; he faced another defeat in 2016, losing to Lakshmanan again by a narrow margin of 601 votes.
Transition to BJP amidst Political Turmoil
Following the passing of Jayalalithaa, Nagenthran’s standing within the AIADMK diminished significantly, prompting his shift to the BJP in August 2017. During the 2021 Assembly elections, despite being allied with AIADMK, he emerged victorious in his constituency against Lakshmanan once more, reclaiming the seat with a margin of 23,107 votes.
Looking Ahead: New Challengers on the Horizon
With the AIADMK now holding the Tirunelveli seat for the 2026 elections, party officials express relief over Nagenthran’s exit from the constituency. It is anticipated that Thatchai N. Ganesa Raja, the current Tirunelveli district secretary and brother of former MLA N. Malairaja, will be the AIADMK candidate.
Groundwork in Sattur: A New Frontier
Rumors suggest that Nagenthran has already initiated groundwork in the Sattur constituency six months ago, recognizing that the area has a significant population of over 23% Thevar community voters. However, he will face tough competition from K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, a DMK Minister and his former Cabinet colleague, who also commands a strong base in the Virudhunagar district.
Strategic Alliances Shape the Future
Beyond Sattur, the BJP is also eyeing the Vasudevanallur (Reserved) constituency in Tenkasi district, where district president Ananthan Ayyasamy, a technocrat-turned-politician, is set to be fielded as a candidate. This strategic move underscores the BJP’s aims to fortify its presence in the region, ensuring it remains competitive as the electoral landscape continues to evolve.
Conclusion: A New Chapter Awaits
Nainar Nagenthran’s departure from the Tirunelveli constituency marks a significant transition in Tamil Nadu politics. As he prepares to face new challenges, both the BJP and AIADMK are bracing themselves for thrilling electoral battles ahead, making the next few months pivotal for party strategies and voter engagement.
