NCB’s Focus on Drug Syndicates
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has set its sights on dismantling the top 10 drug syndicates operating in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). In a recent quarterly meeting held on March 25, 2026, the agency discussed a variety of issues related to drug trafficking and enforcement strategies in the region.
Key Discussions During the Meeting
This crucial meeting was held in hybrid mode at the Border Security Force (BSF) Frontier Headquarters in Jammu and was chaired by the NCB Deputy Director-General for the North Western Region. Attendees included officials from the BSF, Enforcement Directorate, Income-Tax Department, and the Union Territory’s Drug Control Department.
During the meeting, discussions revealed significant concerns regarding drone-based drug drops, particularly highlighting linkages to Punjab. The NCB emphasized the need for comprehensive mapping of ‘hawala’ operators, identification of hotspots, and a detailed analysis of districts with low drug seizure rates to understand enforcement gaps.
Drone Activity and Drug Seizures
Alarmingly, over 4,300 drone sightings and nearly 970 cases of border incursions have been reported along India’s international borders in the past five years. These incursions have led to substantial seizures, including 641 kg of narcotics, along with arms and ammunition.
According to an NCB annual report released in September 2025, drone-driven narcotic drops have surged, especially along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab. The number of seizures has risen dramatically, moving from just three cases in 2021 to an astounding 179 in 2024.
Threat to National Security
The increasing use of drones for smuggling drugs poses a severe threat to India’s internal security. Reports indicate that border districts such as Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozpur, and Gurdaspur are heavily impacted, with large consignments of heroin and opium being recovered regularly.
The NCB outlined the magnitude of this issue, stating, “Drone sightings and recoveries of narcotics have sharply escalated, necessitating stricter enforcement measures and coordination among various agencies.”
Recent Initiatives in Other Regions
In line with its efforts, the NCB also conducted a recent meeting for Andhra Pradesh on March 24, 2026. This session aimed to tackle evolving drug trafficking patterns along with inter-State and international connections that contribute to the drug menace.
Officials discussed improving inter-agency coordination, conducting thorough investigations into financial and organized crime networks, and monitoring key cases currently under prosecution. This holistic approach is intended to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking across the country.
