Residents Voice Their Concerns
Residents of Kannankurichi in Salem district have expressed their discontent over the presence of two TASMAC outlets situated in the heart of their community. These liquor shops are not only located near a government school and police station but also close to the Kannankurichi bus stand. Residents say that the heavy foot traffic around these outlets, especially in the evenings, hampers their ability to navigate the roads safely.
Calls for Immediate Action
The community members have made multiple representations to local authorities, urging them to consider shifting these TASMAC outlets. With many families and children frequenting the area, the presence of alcoholic beverage shops has raised safety and health concerns. One resident reported that overwhelming crowds accumulate around the outlets, making it difficult for pedestrians to pass by unhindered.
Impact on Local Environment
A. Subramani, a long-time resident, highlighted earlier issues that the community faced regarding infrastructure, stating that while the area has witnessed significant development in the past 15 years, inadequate sewage channels remain a problem. The dumping of garbage, particularly near the local burial ground, has also been a persistent issue, adding to the foul smell that deters visitors to the nearby primary health center and temple.
Local Leaders’ Track Record
The Kannankurichi region falls under the Salem North assembly constituency, represented by Tourism Minister R. Rajendran of the DMK. Since its establishment in 2008, the constituency has seen a mix of political representation, with the DMK winning the majority of elections. Despite this, residents are now rallying to highlight their grievances, calling on their elected officials to take action.
Infrastructure Developments in the Area
In the past year and a half, improvements have been made, including the relaying of roads and provision of stormwater drainage, which has generally enhanced the infrastructure. Residents commend the efforts to tackle lack of drinking water and sewage issues, but they insist that addressing the presence of the TASMAC outlets remains a pressing concern.
Future Developments and Transportation Issues
Compounding the issue is the ongoing transportation challenge faced by locals. V. Madhu, a resident of nearby Ponnammapet, pointed out the complications caused by two active railway gates that often disrupt traffic. With more than 30 buses relying on the main road, residents are hopeful for the proposed flyover project announced by the government, but they are still waiting for construction to commence.
Community’s Call to Action
As the number of people moving to Kannankurichi continues to increase, the community’s demands for a safer, cleaner environment are becoming increasingly urgent. The calls for the relocation of the TASMAC outlets is just one of many steps residents hope will enhance their quality of life, balancing development with the well-being of their families and the broader community.
