Collective Action Needed to Safeguard Youth from Drug Menace

Collective Efforts to Combat Drug Abuse

In a pressing call to action, District Collector Sumit Kumar has emphasized the urgent need for collective efforts to protect youth and students from the rampant issue of drug abuse. Speaking at the district-level Narcotics Coordination Committee (NCORD) meeting held in Chittoor on March 25, 2026, he highlighted that safeguarding the younger generation is crucial for ensuring a better future for the nation.

Review of Anti-Narcotics Initiatives

The meeting, presided over by Collector Kumar and Superintendent of Police Tushar Dudi, aimed to evaluate ongoing anti-narcotics measures and awareness programs in place across the district. Kumar directed officials to ramp up awareness campaigns specifically at ZP high schools, under the supervision of Revenue Development Officials (RDOs) and Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) at the cluster level.

Education on Substance Abuse

A key part of the strategy involves educating students about the legal implications of substance abuse. Collector Kumar stressed the necessity of involving non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in these prevention efforts. With a focus on early intervention, the campaigns aim to instill an understanding among youth regarding the dangers of drug use.

Crackdown on Illegal Tobacco Supply

In addition to addressing drug abuse, strict measures have been ordered against illegal suppliers of tobacco products to students. This multi-faceted approach is aimed not only at curbing drug use but also at protecting the health of young individuals in the district.

Enhanced Vigilance Required

Collector Kumar instructed heightened vigilance along the district’s borders, as well as focused monitoring in sensitive regions such as Nagari and Kuppam. These areas have been identified as hotspots for drug-related activities, necessitating a proactive stance to prevent substance abuse.

Installation of CCTV Cameras

As part of immediate preventive measures, CCTV cameras valued at ₹2 lakh are set to be installed in 25 ZP high schools within a week. This initiative aims to enhance security and deter potential drug-related activities within school environments.

Comprehensive Action Plan

Superintendent of Police Tushar Dudi outlined a comprehensive action plan to effectively combat drug abuse within the district. He urged all departments to work in harmony to achieve the goal of a drug-free community. Awareness about the toll-free Eagle helpline (1972) was also a highlight, with the aim of encouraging reporting and seeking help for drug-related issues.

Preventing Ganja Cultivation

Additionally, Dudi underscored the importance of curbing ganja cultivation at the grassroots level, marking it as a critical component of the broader strategy to combat drug abuse. The meeting welcomed participation from various departments, demonstrating a united front against the drug menace affecting the youth.

Conclusion

This concerted effort is a vital step towards creating a safe and supportive environment for students and youth in Chittoor. By fostering awareness and education, alongside strict enforcement measures, local authorities aim to significantly reduce drug abuse and its detrimental effects on the community.
